SENATOR SMITH: All on A deck?
MR. ETCHES: Not on A deck. There were only two cabins on the after end of A deck. One was vacant and the other was occupied.
SENATOR SMITH: On the deck below, under your charge, what rooms did you have?
MR. ETCHES: 98, 96, 94; and then came the door. The other rooms were empty until I came to 84, occupied by Mr. Guggenheim and his secretary. Mr. Carter's valet was in 96, the inside cabin.
SENATOR SMITH: Where were you when the collision came?
MR. ETCHES: Asleep, sir. . . .
SENATOR SMITH: How were you awakened?
MR. ETCHES: I was awakened by something, but I did not know what it was, and I called to my mate and I said "What time is it that they are going to call us next?" It was then between 25 minutes and 20 minutes to 12. He said, "I don't know. "I turned over to go to sleep again. At that minute I heard a loud shout, "Close water-tight bulkheads." I recognized it as our boatswain's voice; it was extra loud. Hooked out and he was running from fore to aft.
SENATOR SMITH: What was he saying?
MR. ETCHES: The one shout, "Close water-tight bulkhead doors."
SENATOR SMITH: How long was that after the impact?
MR. ETCHES: That would be under 10 minutes, sir. Seven minutes, I' would say, as near as possible. . . .
SENATOR SMITH: Did you arouse your passengers in their staterooms?
MR. ETCHES: I aroused the passengers in my stateroom; yes. I saw them all out, except Mr. Carter's family, and Mr. Harrison told me they were already up.
SENATOR SMITH: Did you assist in putting life belts on them?
MR. ETCHES: Yes, sir; but more on C deck. I threw the life belts down, and then threw some of them into the corridor. Mr. Andrews said to be sure there were no life belts left. The first cabin I went to was at the foot of the pantry stairs. I pulled the bottom drawer out there and stood on it, and got out life belts, and as a gentleman was passing there, I gave him one of those.

ETCHES : J’ai été réveillé par quelque chose, mais je ne savais pas ce que c’était, et j’ai appelé mon compagnon et je lui ai dit : « À quelle heure ils vont encore venir nous appeler? » Il était alors entre 25 et 20 minutes avant minuit. Il a dit, "Je ne sais pas. "Je me suis retourné pour aller dormir à nouveau. À ce moment-là, j’ai entendu un cri fort : «Fermez les cloisons étanches». Je l’ai reconnu comme étant la voix de notre maître d’équipage; c’était très fort. Il est sorti et il courait de l’avant vers l’arrière.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Que disait-il?
M. ETCHES : Il criait : «Fermez les portes étanches.»
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Combien de temps après l’impact?
M. ETCHES : Moins de 10 minutes, monsieur. Sept minutes, je dirais, le plus près possible...
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Avez-vous réveillé vos passagers dans leurs cabines?
M. ETCHES : J’ai réveillé les passagers dans ma cabine, oui. Je les ai tous vus dehors, sauf la famille de M. Carter, et M. Harrison m’a dit qu’ils étaient déjà debout.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Avez-vous aidé à leur mettre des ceintures de sauvetage?
M. ETCHES : Oui, monsieur, mais plus sur le pont C. J’ai jeté les ceintures de sauvetage par terre et j’en ai jeté quelques-unes dans le couloir. M. Andrews m’a dit de m’assurer qu’il ne restait plus de ceintures de sauvetage. La première cabine où je suis allé était au pied de l’escalier de la lingerie. J’ai sorti le tiroir du bas et sorti des ceintures de sauvetage, et comme un homme passait par là, je lui en ai donné une.
